Temperature Calibration Services

Devices to measure temperature are crucial tools in the laboratory process. Many temperature sensors can be fragile, and regular use in the lab without routine maintenance can lead to inaccuracies in measurement. Whether scheduled regularly or ordered after an incident in the lab, proper calibration services are key to consistent, accurate measurement.

Highly accurate temperature-measuring devices can also be expensive. You can protect your laboratory’s investment in these tools by establishing a regular maintenance plan that includes calibration. These devices serve as the foundation of your work and should be maintained for the safety, accuracy, and quality of your lab.

Which tools and devices benefit from routine temperature calibration?
Laboratories maintain a variety of temperature-sensing tools. Routine calibration is important to the ongoing accuracy of these tools and more:

  • Liquid-in-glass thermometer – Also known as a bulb thermometer, a liquid–e.g., commonly used mercury–fills a bulb at the end of a glass tube. The changes in the liquid (expansion, contraction) indicate the temperature against a scale on the tube.
  • Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) – The relationship between temperature and resistance allows the sensor to indicate temperature based on changes in resistance in a metal wire.
  • Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometer (SPRT) – An RTD that usually features fine platinum wire wrapped around a heat-resistant core. The relationship between temperature and resistance allows the sensor to indicate temperature based on the metal wire’s electrical resistance.
  • Thermocouple – This sensor measures temperature by using two different types of metal conductors, joined in an electrical circuit with a fixed temperature at one junction. Measuring the voltage of the device indicates temperature.
  • Thermistor – A thermal resistor or thermistor changes resistance based on temperature.
  • Digital thermometers
  • Freezers
  • Ovens and autoclaves

How is temperature calibration performed?

There are two methods by which Bio Calibration Company professionals deliver calibration services:

  1. Comparison method. Using a device that has confirmed accuracy as a control, the measurement of the device being tested is compared against the same measurement by the standard device.
  • The standard device is calibrated to meet the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) or similar standards.
  • Typically used for thermometers, but is also available for SPRT, RTD, thermocouples, or other temperature probes or sensors
  • Scope of this method: -80ºC to 350ºC
  1. Simulation method. Electronic signals are produced from traceable process equipment (process calibrator) that duplicate the correct signal made by a theoretically accurate temperature sensor.
  • Instruments are calibrated against the traceable sourced values produced from the process calibrator, or simulator, after entering in your desired output temperature.
  • Sensor compliance may need to be verified with an additional device (dry-well, or micro-bath), which would generate an accurate temperature for the sensor to read and to calibrate against.
  • Scope of this method: -15ºC to 350ºC

Where does temperature calibration take place?

Bio Calibration Co. can deliver temperature calibration services one of two ways:

  • On-site at your facility – Our technicians will come to your facility and perform calibration services.
  • At Bio Calibration Co.’s calibration lab – With our guidance, you will ship your devices to our lab for calibration by our in-house technicians.

What to look for in reliable calibration services
To ensure the best results, accurate instruments, and documented compliance, be sure that your temperature-measuring instruments are calibrated against NIST traceable equipment.

Be sure that you receive the proper documentation of calibration. With Bio Calibration Co., you’ll receive a certificate of calibration and a calibration label for your instrument. Upon completion of the service, you’ll also be offered to schedule your next service, and a record of that appointment can be kept on file as well. This record underscores your lab’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of your devices.
